The main islands in Hawaii are Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui, and Hawaii. Hawaii is the most isolated place on earth. Due to Hawaii's isolation 30% of the fish are endemic. These fish can only be found in Hawaii.
Visitors to Hanauma Bay are required by law to refrain from mistreating marine animals or from touching, walking, or otherwise having contact with coral heads, which appear much like large rocks on the ocean floor. It is always recommended to avoid contacting coral or marine rocks as cuts to the skin can result and neglecting such wounds may bring medical problems.
About 400 species of fish are known to inhabit the bay. Hanauma Bay is known for its abundance of Green Sea Turtles, known as Honu. The Hanauma Crater was created about 32,000 years ago. Due to the lack of fresh water at Hanauma Bay, the area was not inhabited in the past. Archeologists have found fishing tools and other indications of human presence at Hanauma Bay. The bay was used as a recreational area by the Hawaiian nobility (Ali'i), including King Kamehameha and Queen Ka'ahumanu, who fished, entertained visitors, and sponsored games there. Hanauma Bay was also used as a layover point and as a navigational lookout point, since the waters between Oahu and Molokai can be difficult at times.
The name Hanauma Bay has many meanings in Hawaiian language. Hana means bay. Uma means Curved Shape or a Hand Wrestling Game. Arm Wrestling Games were held at festivals held by Queen Ka'ahumanu. Uma also may refer to the curved shaped of the canoes used by the Hawaiians at Hanauma Bay.
Hanauma Bay sees an average of 3000 visitors a day, or around a million visitors a year. The majority are tourists from the U.S., Canada, Japan, Austrailia and Europe. There is a nine minute video that everyone visiting Hanauma Bay is required to see. The movie explains how the bay was created and how to the protect the bay. The video also has some safety information about snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.
